For Updaters: If you have a MacGAMUT 6 CD, please install MacGAMUT from the CD BEFORE you install this Update. If you have already installed an earlier version of MacGAMUT 6, click here to skip the info for UPGRADERS.
For UPGRADERS: If you BOUGHT a MacGAMUT 2003 User Disk, you are entitled to a FREE UPGRADE to MacGAMUT 6. You will use your old start2003.mgs file the first time you access the new MacGAMUT 6 software; at that time, your file will be upgraded to the new startMG6.mgs format. Everything else you need will be in the Web Installer you download and install. If you have not downloaded your personal start2003.mgs file from the Register MacGAMUT section of www.macgamut.com, you cannot use these Web installers, so there's no reason to download them.
What if I have not registered my own start2003.mgs file? If the last version you bought was MacGAMUT 2000 (or some earlier version), and you would like to have all the improvements and enhancements in MacGAMUT 6, it's time to buy the new version. The suggested retail price for MacGAMUT 6 is just $40. Click here for ordering info (including online ordering). If you've already had your free upgrade from MacGAMUT 2000 to MacGAMUT 2003 and you would prefer to continue using that version rather than buying the new one, be sure you're using the final revision (MacGAMUT 2003.12a). If not, click here to go to the 2003 update download page.
If you want more info about the UPGRADE process (what comes next after you've installed MacGAMUT 6), click here. You won't believe how easy it is to UPGRADE!
The Web Installers on this page do not include the MacGAMUT Music Theory Basics materials or the Managing Your startMG6 File and Exploring the Melodic Dictation Window videos. Because of the size of these additional materials, they are available as separate downloads. Copies of the original MacGAMUT dictation libraries are on this page too. Click here to go to the User Disk Extras download page.
NOTE: If the installer window does not appear when you think it should, it is probably hidden behind other windows that are open on your screen. In that case, you can minimize other windows so that the installer window shows.
Download MacGAMUT 6_1_1 Win.exe (WINDOWS, 3.4 MB)
If you download the file directly to a Windows computer, click "Run" on the "Download complete" dialog, or start by double-clicking the .exe file you have downloaded. NOTE: MacGAMUT 6 requires Macintosh System 10.3 or higher to run.
Download MacGAMUT 6_1_1b Mac.zip (MACINTOSH, 1.5 MB)
To install the MacGAMUT 6 User Disk Web Installer for Macintosh, just follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. The installer will place all the MacGAMUT files, including the Text Files (e.g., A Quick Start Guide, User Guide, and MacGAMUT Keyboard Shortcuts), in a folder labeled MacGAMUT 6 in your Applications folder.
IMPORTANT info: If you double-click your start file to open your newly downloaded MacGAMUT 6 Web Installer and MacGAMUT 2003 or the MacGAMUT 6 Demo or some other MacGAMUT application opens instead of MacGAMUT 6, your Macintosh is linking to the wrong MacGAMUT application. Fortunately, the problem is easy to fix. First close the MacGAMUT application that is open. Then right-click (or Ctrl-click) on your start file, and select Get Info. Click on the Open with arrow to make it point downward, and then select MacGAMUT 6 from the list of applications in the popup menu. Click the Change All button, and from then on, double-clicking your .mgs file will always open MacGAMUT 6.

MacGAMUT 6 Changes since the original 6.0 CD version was released (latest version includes all of the following changes):
Version 6.1.1b change (Macintosh only):
Fixes a problem that could prevent the notehead cursor from appearing and could also prevent the entry of accidentals on some Macintosh computers.
Version 6.1.1 changes:
Version 6.1.0b change (Macintosh only):
Fixed a possible program crash that could occur when the user chose a Make My Own Drill as the first thing to work on.
Version 6.1.0a change (Macintosh Intel only):
Fixed an Intel “translation” bug that prevented non-transposable melodies from being presented correctly. This bug was perhaps most obvious in the earlier levels of the Prep Presets Melodic Dictation library, but it also occurred if an instructor had customized any Melodic Dictation library to include non-transposable melodies.
Version 6.1.0:
·
Major
Update! Added the MacGAMUT Virtual Keyboard—an
on-screen “piano” Keyboard that allows users to enter responses from the
Virtual Keyboard whenever MIDI/Virtual Keyboard entry is allowed.
This new feature is especially important for the ISC Keyboard drills,
but it is also convenient for entering RD, MD, and HD responses (assuming
the Instructor has not changed the default settings that allow MIDI/Virtual
Keyboard entry in RD, MD, and HD).
As with MIDI entry, users can enter pitches and durations separately
or at the same time using the Virtual Keyboard in MD.
Users can also “play” the Keyboard whenever it is visible.
·
Added
computer keyboard shortcuts for rests in RD and MD.
·
Fixed a
bug that could cause a variety of problems if the user entered a large
number of extra notes from a MIDI keyboard.
·
Added
numerous minor refinements (too minor and too numerous to list separately)
that make MacGAMUT even more user-friendly.
·
Fixed a
problem that could result in incorrect stats for time spent and number of
exercises completed for Make My Own Drills, depending on how the user
accessed these drills.
·
Removed
unnecessary blank space at the end of the staff in MacGAMUT RD and MD
windows on extra-large monitors.
·
Macintosh
only:
Fixed a possible MIDI conflict between MacGAMUT and other programs
that use MIDI.
·
Fixed
problems with showing time stats for specific date ranges.
Windows only:
The problem was with showing Written and Keyboard time stats.
Macintosh only:
The stats were shown correctly, but the “from” and “to” dates did not
remain selected when the user changed to stats for a different kind of
drill.
·
Fixed an
RD and MD “Squeeze” problem that could result in a bar line not being moved
correctly.
·
Made it
possible for Windows 98 and Me users to use the earlier version of the Gamut
font if they are unable to install the new
MacGAMUT
6 Gamut2 font.
·
Macintosh
only:
Fixed a problem that could occasionally result in incorrect grading
of an inversion in a secondary function analysis if the instructor had
specified that cadential six-four chords should be analyzed as V64 instead
of I64.
·
Fixed a
problem which resulted in Written or Keyboard Interval exercises including
only ascending Intervals when an Instructor had specified both ascending and
descending Intervals in a custom-created level.
·
Windows
only:
Fixed a bug that could prevent the Enter MIDI button from being
activated at the right time.
·
Windows
only:
Took additional steps to prevent other programs from interfering
with MacGAMUT’s sound output (an extremely rare problem, but nonetheless
annoying if it happened to you!).
·
Macintosh
only:
Fixed a grand-staff Keyboard Chords MIDI entry bug that could result
in incorrect notation, even though you played the correct notes on the
keyboard.
·
Macintosh
only:
Fixed a record-keeping bug that could make a user lose credit for
work that had been completed.
·
Windows
only:
Fixed a problem some Windows computers might have in recognizing
MacGAMUT CDs in external or secondary CD/DVD drives.
·
Fixed a
bug that identified some wrong compound Intervals with a “nonsense” quality
(e.g., x11 or z11 instead of P11).
Might have given the user the impression that the wrong answer was
just too far out there for MacGAMUT to identify, but it really was a bug!
·
Macintosh
only:
Removed a bogus alert message a user might see when installing new
presets. (Presets were, in fact,
installed properly, even though the message said there was a problem with
the presets file.)
·
Windows
only:
Fixed a MIDI problem that could occur if MacGAMUT was used with a
