MacGAMUT Tech Support

If you are having difficulty with anything having to do with MacGAMUT software, we'll do our best to help you. To arrive at the quickest solution for your problem, please follow this two-step process:

Step 1

You may be able to solve the problem immediately without even needing to contact Tech Support. Check the following resources to see if the answer is there:

  • Make sure you've downloaded and installed the latest MacGAMUT version (6.3.0c for both Windows and Macintosh). Hint: In general, you won't find info here about bugs that have been fixed because a list of bugs that have been fixed is included on the Web Installer pages. If you are using the latest version, you won't be bothered by those bugs, so there's no reason to waste your time here looking for questions you wouldn't have if you had already installed the latest version! If you are already using the latest version and are still having a problem, then read on!
  • If you don't have a start file: Use your Registration Number to register to receive your start file (click Register on the left side of this page or click REGISTER ONLINE at the top of this page).
  • If you want to install the latest version of MacGAMUT: click Installers on the left side of this page; then download and run the MacGAMUT 6 installer for your operating system. Make sure the installation process is complete.
  • If you can't download your start file from the link in your Registration Confirmation e-mail: The download process varies from browser to browser, and it may even be prevented by your anti-virus or security software. You may need to copy the link and paste it into your browser's address box. If you can't figure out how to download your file from this link, you may find it easier to Register again, using the same Registration Number and Name you registered with before, and download your file from the Registration complete! page. If your e-mail never arrives, re-registering and downloading your file from the Registration complete! page solves that problem too!
  • NOTE for Macintosh 10.13.4 (or higher) High Sierra users: The first time you use MacGAMUT on 10.13.4 (or higher) High Sierra, you'll see a message warning you that MacGAMUT is a 32-bit application. We KNOW it is, and we're taking steps to deal with it. No need to notify us about something we're already well aware of. On the bright side, MacGAMUT is programmed so efficiently that we've actually had to put delays in its operation so that it won't be TOO fast (e.g., appearing to give you the correct answer almost before you click Check Answer). In short, please ignore Apple's message!
  • NOTE for Macintosh 10.14 (or higher) Mojave users: If you see a warning that MacGAMUT's music notation cursors will not work, the problem is that you haven't yet updated to the latest (6.3.0c) version of MacGAMUT. You still won't see the regular music notation cursors because of a problem with Apple's new system, but instead of the substitute arrow cursor, you'll get a cross-hair cursor that's easy to use. Click here to go to the Web Installer page.
  • If you're getting the "Sorry--sound doesn't seem to be working properly" alert on a Windows 10 computer, be sure you've updated to MacGAMUT version (6.3.0c. If that doesn't solve the problem, see the next item.
  • If you're having problems with sound on a Windows 10, 8, 7, or Vista computer (for example, you don't hear any sound at all when you try to play the MacGAMUT exercises), click here for help in solving the problem. If that doesn't solve the problem, it could be that your computer system doesn't have any MIDI capabilities. If you don't have any output devices in your MIDI Out menu (under Sound) or if none of the output devices listed produces sound in MacGAMUT, click here for a solution. If you're having sound problems on a Windows XP computer, click here.
  • If you're having problems entering notes and accidentals on the right line and space, you may find it easier if you use the Magnify tool (Windows) or Zoom (Macintosh) to make the note entry area larger. For more info, check out I'm having trouble getting the notes and accidentals written on the right line or space on the staff under Questions about using MacGAMUT in the MacGAMUT FAQs.
  • If you have a MacGAMUT 2003 User CD and are still using MacGAMUT 2003 software, download and install your FREE UPGRADE to MacGAMUT 6.
  • If you get an error message that says some or all of MacGAMUT cannot be installed when you try to install MacGAMUT on a Windows computer: For most Windows users, installation is an easy and straightforward process, but your computer will not allow you to install MacGAMUT unless you are logged on with Administrator privileges. All you have to do is switch from whatever Windows user account you are currently using to an Administrator account. Then run the MacGAMUT installer again.
  • If you upgrade to a higher Macintosh version (from 10.13 to 10.14, for instance) and you get a message saying there is a problem with the Gamut font: When you upgrade, the new system doesn't necessarily transfer all the info about software you installed in your previous system. Fortunately, the problem is easy to fix. Just install MacGAMUT again, and the Gamut font will automatically be installed in the new system. We recommend installing the latest updated MacGAMUT Web Installer (click here to go to the Web Installer page) so that you'll also be installing the latest version of MacGAMUT software at the same time. In other words, for most folks, you can fix the problem by doing something you should do anyway!
  • Check out A Quick Start Guide and the User Guide which are automatically installed on your computer when you install MacGAMUT software. You'll find both of these files in the MacGAMUT Work Folder in your computer's Documents (the User Guide will be in the Text Files folder inside that MacGAMUT Work Folder).
  • If you're having trouble getting started with MacGAMUT 6, you'll find detailed instructions on this website for Getting Started.
  • If a MacGAMUT application shuts down when you try to open or save a file on a 64-bit Windows computer, click here for a solution.
  • If you are having difficulty accessing the original MacGAMUT Dictation libraries (MGRhythms 2003.mgr, MGMelodies 2003.mgm, and MGProgressions 2003.mgh) on your computer, click here to go to the library download page.
  • The MacGAMUT FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) on this website have a wealth of information on a variety of topics, including many tech support issues.

    2. For Mac users: Use Grab (in the Utilities Folder in your Applications Folder). Double-click Grab to open it, and then choose “Window” from the Capture menu to take a snapshot of your MacGAMUT window.
